Serving While Learning And Learning By Doing
While preparing for the
DTM ceremony at the last D25 Fall Conference, my mind took a stroll down memory
lane, reminding me how my leadership in toastmasters all started.
It was June of 2010 when
I joined Toastmasters to create a better version of myself. Hesitant and intimidated, I was still determined
and eager to learn. When the 2011 club officers election arrived, the
nominating committee approached me and asked if I was ready to serve the
club.
My heart was telling me
to say, “YES! Go for it!”, because I truly do love to serve others and I
learn better by actually doing the thing I don't really know how. My brain, on the other hand, was telling me
exactly the opposite. I recall completely
doubting myself and having a low self-esteem, which is not a good combination. All I could think of at that moment was,
"What if I fail and what if I can't do my job?"
After thinking it
through and a working on a whole lot of self-motivation, finally, I said,
"Yes I can give it a try".
Serving my home club as
VP Membership that year helped me discover and utilize my inner capabilities.
It never crossed my mind that I would enjoy serving my club while learning
about the program, but I did. Toastmasters provided me the right platform.
Thanks to my mentors and all my Toastmasters friends for nurturing me, and
thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve.
This may sound familiar
to everyone, but if you are a new member or someone who's just been sitting
back, this is for you. Richard Branson says, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity
but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later”. Some of you might also say; "Fake it ‘til
you make it". I just know that you'll never know until you give it a try. I am glad I did.
